My First BAREFOOT Run

Last night I read that after a long run, one should do an easy run the day after to avoid stiffness in the legs. I decided to go barefoot today. I ran with my 4yr old son. He started off fast and got burned out fast too. But he was a trooper. I think I took an easy stroll, but I don't really know how to pace myself. These are my results for today's quick run per RunKeeper.

Not bad really since I've actually never ran barefoot outside before. I think I'll actually try to start incorporating barefoot runs into my schedule.

  1. I've never done a barefoot run, but I can never pace myself! I usually start off at the pace I hope will be my average and then get tired after 10-15 minutes, and then it becomes a struggle until I get into a groove later on. So frustrating!

  2. Hi Daniel,
I've been reading many running articles and I learned something. Time and time again I read that you should start off slow, then increase speed in the middle and try to keep a steady pace, and then ramp up to your top speed towards the end.
But I too have a problem with pacing. I think I start out too fast and tire. I have been trying to start off slower, but I think it just takes practice.
I do know that during most of my runs my pace constantly changes from a jog to a run then back to a jog. My goal is trying not to stop.

  3. Diane, Thanks for leaving a comment on my post (I had just finished from Couch to 5K Program and preparing for first 5K)!

I am in awe that you can run barefoot or with minimal type shoes. Be glad you have young feet that let yo do that. I'm guessing that, because you are doing it at a younger age, you will be able to condition your feet to continue running like that for a very long time. I'm 63, so my toosties are tender, with no fat pads left for cushion. I have to have something between my foot and the road. :)

I am going to run the 5K with some family members...the first for all of us. My son, who is 34 and a seasoned runner, is doing it with us, too. I have had lots going on last week and this week, too, so my running schedule will be messed up right before the race. I am trying to be positive that whatever time I get to squeeze in before it will be OK cuz I've worked consistently at it since July and have built up my endurance slowly. I know I can complete it...I just don't want to be last!! :)

Last night, my niece loaded a Nike app onto my iPod that lets keeps track of how far I run and the time it took me to do that. I just hope I can figure out how to open it when I'm ready to use it!!! It made sense while she was doing it........

Looking forward to reading about your progress!!
